DeutschSprechen

You'll only get better once you say the sentence out loud

Practice Speaking German

I've tried so many apps to learn German. Most of them are good for getting started, for vocabulary or grammar exercises. You click here, select an option there. But at some point, you realize: Understanding isn't enough. I could read a lot, and I could even understand some things when people spoke to me. But speaking myself? That was a whole different story. The words just wouldn’t come out. Or they’d come out, but wrong. I needed something that would force me to open my mouth. And that’s what I found in DeutschSprechen. It’s a German learning app, and it focuses on exactly that: speaking.

The First Hurdle: You Have to Open Your Mouth

It was really hard at first. I was reluctant to speak out loud. You’re afraid of making mistakes, of embarrassing yourself. But the app is designed so that you have no choice. Many exercises—especially the word cards—require you to say the sentence out loud. Not just read it, not just click on it, but actually say it. I remember one situation where I knew the word but was missing the ending. I tried again and again, and the app showed me that something was wrong. Only when I pronounced it correctly, with the right ending, did I move on. That’s the kind of moment when you realize: This is really about practicing speaking German. No false sense of security from multiple-choice questions—just direct feedback on your own pronunciation. It’s a small but crucial difference from other apps, which often only test word recognition. DeutschSprechen prioritizes speaking over multiple-choice.

AI, Language Groups, and Real People

What I especially appreciate is the variety of ways to actually get into speaking. First, I used the AI. By the way, it’s completely free—no tokens or premium subscriptions required. You can choose between four modes: Role, Photo, Debate, and Situation. I often used Role mode to practice simple dialogs. It’s great for getting used to speaking without the pressure of making mistakes in front of real people. And best of all: If you already have your own Gemini or OpenAI key, you can use it, and it stays on your device. That gives me peace of mind when it comes to my data. Once I felt more comfortable with the AI, I switched to the language groups and meeting rooms. Here, you’ll meet other learners. Sometimes there are just a few people, sometimes a larger group. It’s a great way to have real conversations. And when I’m feeling brave, I also check the online list to find someone for a one-on-one chat. There are also video groups, but I haven’t joined them very often yet. The option is there, though. You can read more about it here: sesli-grup-pratik.

Vocabulary, Grammar, and the Widget Trick

The vocabulary feature is also very well designed. There are over 5,000 example sentences, organized by level. You can swipe through the sentences: once if you want to see it again, or “I know” if you’ve mastered it. The SRS system with intervals of 1, 3, 7, 30, and 90 days is effective. I’ve also created my own lists and even imported TXT files, which is super convenient. The autoplay feature, which reads aloud both the on-screen text and the German word, is very helpful. And one feature I didn’t discover until later—but now can’t live without—is the widget. Go to the menu, then to the app settings, select “Widget,” save it, and then add it using your phone’s widget picker. It shows you your current vocabulary words and how many repetitions are due. That way, you can always see what needs to be done without having to open the app. By the way, all the words stay on your device. Here’s more info about the widget: widget-kelimeler-ana-ekran.

Everything is free, with no hidden costs

I really have to emphasize this: DeutschSprechen is completely free. There’s no premium upgrade, no token shop, nothing like that. At first, I didn’t believe it, because apps like this almost always try to sell you something. But here, it’s really true. The only thing you need for the chat is a Google or Apple login, but that’s standard. There are points you can earn to unlock certain rooms, but that’s not a subscription or a purchase. It’s simply a reward for using the app. I think the transparency and fairness are great. It really is an app designed to help you learn without taking money out of your pocket. More Than Just an App: Radio, Podcasts, Tests

In addition to speaking practice, there are many other useful features. I often listen to the radio or podcasts right in the app. This is great for getting a feel for the language and getting used to different accents. The pronunciation feature is also great: You record a sentence, and the app gives you feedback. This is a huge help for improving your pronunciation. And for those preparing for exams: There are exercises for “Leben in Deutschland” with 300 questions and A1–B2 grammar exercises. While these aren’t official exam versions, they’re very helpful for preparing for the structure and content. And if someone bothers you or behaves inappropriately, there’s a feature to report and block them. This ensures a pleasant learning environment. If you’d like to dive in more deeply, you’ll find a good getting started page here. I’m really glad I found this app. It’s helped me overcome my fear of speaking and make real progress.
